Lollapalooza Day 3: Out With a Bang!

August 9, 2010

While the day started with some showers, the skies cleared up by early afternoon to give Chicagoans a full day of heat and humidity yesterday and yes, scorching performances to match.  Umbrellas pulled double duty, offering protection from the early storms and later the intense sun. The crowds didn’t let the weather keep them away though - quite the opposite actually - overcrowding festival stages for performances from Frightened Rabbit, Mumford & Sons, The Temper Trap, Cypress Hill, MGMT, Yeasayer and The National, among others.

To keep with the dichotomous nature of the festival’s headliners, Sunday night’s closers couldn’t have been more different: grunge heavy-hitters, Soundgarden, or indie stars turned Madison Square Garden headliners, Arcade Fire.  While Soundgarden could be heard literally the entire length of Grant Park, what Arcade Fire lacked in volume, they made up with passion. The band cranked through a set largely consisting of tracks from the newly-released The Suburbs, but really hit their crowd-pleasing stride, reaching what can only be described as a religious experience, with older hits like “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels),” “Rebellion (Lies),” “Intervention,” and blazing encore “Wake Up.” Check out a few photos from the day, and don’t miss our entire gallery of the fashions of the day!
